With the support of soundpocket and Art Center Ongoing, Cheri Tang Tsz-wai is currently undertaking a one-month artist residency in Tokyo. Rooted in a fascination with the acoustic potential of clay bodies, Cheri’s practice invites the audience to join her in uncovering the unique sonic personalities embedded in everyday matter.

In Hong Kong Cheri works with ceramics and often reflects on her reliance on commercial clay, feeling disconnected from the local earth. During this journey to Tokyo, she has extended her ongoing project 𝘱𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 from Hong Kong to the geological and urban landscapes of Japan. Her process is one of direct, quiet engagement: from construction sites, the city’s soil memory; from historic ceramic centers, locally mined clays. This is soil with memory – earth that remembers where it has been, what has passed over it, and what has been buried beneath it.

This exhibition is an expression of a material dialogue between the artist and the land. By blending these clays with industrial elements and field recordings from visited locations, Cheri has created a series of ceramic sound bodies – resonant vessels that give voice to the spirit of their origin. They are ([[o]]): an opening, a mouth, an ear, a threshold, a hollow that knows the shape of giving.

Cheri Tang Tsz-wai is supported by soundpocket’s Artist Support Programme 2025–26.
